She should have stayed in -- China, or the Devil's Den-MomCave, wherever she was.....  she certainly doesn't know when to keep her damn attitudes to herself....  talk about harassment,   she has a lot of nerve --  talking to those guys or any pro player about their workout, eating or exercise habits....

Where is Michelle?

She was only supposed to be in China until I thought the 26-27th, not sure though, but NOTHING has been said about her since the 27th of March, and no info on her trip home or what she and the girls did their final days there.....  or if they are saying somewhere else for another week or so....wonder what is going on?  Anyone else hear anything??  Seems kind of ODD when every step and every breath they take is always publicized.....  seems like she, the kids and Momma fell off the face of the earth and out of Publicity range.

I wonder what gives???  There should have been something in some of the MSM media about when she and they all came home, and how wonderful a trip they had and what else they did while they were over there.....  maybe the Press is mad at them? or something....

"Jealousy and discontent have festered" in Michelle's Obama's "Worst Wing"

MadMichelle.jpgJessica Chasmar is reporting that a former White House aide is calling Michelle Obama's East Wing the "Worst Wing" due to the first lady's micromanaging and high-stress work environment.

In a New Republic article, titled "The Worst Wing: How the East Wing Shrunk Michelle Obama," Reid Cherlin, who worked as an assistant press secretary in the West Wing, describes a "high-stress, high-stakes workplace, in which Mrs. Obama scrutinized the smallest facets of her schedule."

"Aides in both wings of the White House say she insists on planning every move months in advance and finalizing speeches weeks ahead of time -- a rigidity nearly unheard of in today's chaotic political environment," he said.

Mr. Cherlin said aides grapple for scraps of Mrs. Obama's attention, causing deep-seated jealousy and discontentment.

"Fueling these sentiments, according to former East Wing insiders, is the exacting but often ambivalent leadership style of the first lady herself," he wrote.

One former aide to Michelle Obama told Mr. Cherlin that each meeting "was like an identity crisis, whether you got invited or not."

This is hardly news.  A May, 2011 report by Julie Mason and Amie Parnes said that less than three years into the job, Michelle Obama is on her third chief of staff and third social secretary.  She is on her second communications director, the White House chief usher recently departed, and her press secretary's last day is Friday.

On Friday afternoon, the first lady's office announced that the executive director of Obama's signature campaign to fight childhood obesity also is leaving.

The turnover, greater than under recent first ladies, underscores the pressure and high expectations of working in an operation known for its polish and discipline.

Sources familiar with the East Wing, who asked not to be named discussing internal dynamics, described the first lady's office as a challenging workplace, where grueling hours and the expectations of a formidable boss intensify the demands of managing a popular first lady's schedule, image and agenda.

"The first lady is a lovely woman, but she's tough as nails, and that can be hard for some people," said a source familiar with the office.  "She has really high expectations."

This is a case study of a "hostile work environment."

Pressure; high expectations; discipline; challenging workplace; grueling hours; expectations of a formidable boss; demands; managing ... schedule, image and agenda.

Michelle Obama, control freak

Keith Koffler is reporting that writing in the New Republic, former White House West Wing press aide Reid Cherlin goes pretty far out on a limb for a former in-guy with the Obama towel-whipping society, describing Michelle Obama as a controlling yet sometimes fickle East Wing boss who has created an unhappy work environment.

Apparently, all that spontanaiety you see from Michelle takes a lot of planning.

Michelle seriousCherlin was an aide I dealt with frequently before he left the West Wing a couple of years ago to become a freelance writer.

While he was a committed Obama staffer who never “went off the reservation” by dissing the boss or giving me something I wasn’t supposed to have, I didn’t get the sense he had drunk the Kool-Aid as fully as some of the others who worked there or that he was as willing to torture small animals, lie, or do whatever it took to make Obama and his agenda look fantastic.

Cherlin actually treated the press with some respect, which for all I know got him in hot water. He’s not like some of the other former aides from various White House operations who have cynically glided from fangs-bared propagandizing to supposedly unbiased or at least thoughtful journalism.

I realize none of this helps Reid with his ex-colleagues.

Here are some excerpts I’ve strung together from his piece:

The first lady’s office can be a confining, frustrating, even miserable place to work. Jealousy and discontentment have festered, as courtiers squabble over the allocation of responsibility and access to Mrs. Obama, both of which can be aggravatingly scarce. Fueling these sentiments, according to former East Wing insiders, is the exacting but often ambivalent leadership style of the first lady herself.

Unlike her husband, who derives visible satisfaction from his ability to improvise, Mrs. Obama depends on structure to support her public warmth -- the ease with which she’ll pick up a hula-hoop, say, or do the Dougie with school kids.

The imperative to guarantee results could be paralyzing. “That was the pressure on us,” one ex-aide told me. “‘Don’t do it if it’s not going to be perfect.’” Staff knew that every event should produce positive coverage, and that all the angles had to be exhaustively researched and gamed out (not easy with a team of less than 30).

But it was never completely clear what the standard of perfection should be. “There’s no barometer: The first lady having the wrong pencil skirt on Monday is just as big of a fuck-up as someone speaking on the record when they didn’t mean to or a policy initiative that completely failed,” says another former aide. “It just made you super anxious.”

Former staffers describe a high-stress, high-stakes workplace, in which Mrs. Obama scrutinized the smallest facets of her schedule. Aides in both wings of the White House say she insists on planning every move months in advance and finalizing speeches weeks ahead of time -- a rigidity nearly unheard of in today’s chaotic political environment.

“For her, trust is huge, really feeling like people were protecting and thinking about her,” says one alum. “And then, also, she’s a lawyer. She’s really disciplined. She cares about the details. She’s never going to wing it.”

All of this led to a culture of harsh internal judgment. Invitations to meetings with the first lady, in her office above the Jackie Kennedy Garden, became a vital status symbol, a way for staffers to measure their worth. “Every meeting was like an identity crisis, whether you got invited or not,” one former East Winger told me . . .

Whoever the chief of staff has been, Cherlin makes clear that the real power behind the throne is Valerie Jarrett, who gives the orders. Also very powerful is Sam Kass, who seems to have risen from Obama chef and gardener to all-round advisor and general-purpose guru.

They’ve become personal friends even intimates of the first lady, which Cherlin makes suggests, is what it takes to really succeed in the East Wing.

Talk about an unfair work environment.

Michelle Obama said, Barack "has dragged me kicking and screaming into things that I wanted no parts of"

Daniel Halper is reporting that in a question and answer session at Stanford Center at Peking University in Beijing, China, Michelle Obama said that sometimes one needs to do things she's uncomfortable with. She made the comments in response to a question about studying abroad from a graduate student at Peking University..

"For me, I prefer to -- the relationship -- the commerce relationship between -- and the future.  So in this program, I think I cannot only learn about the language, the American cultures, but also I can take some courses on this field.  So in this way, I cannot promote myself on this field, but also, what is most important I think is to learn -- to understand -- to make a better understanding on the United States cultureand people.  And I think it’s really important for people, especially young generation, to have some time to go abroad, to live and study there so in this way they can build a deeper understanding with each other,"

Michelle Obama responded:

"Excellent.  And one thing that you pointed out that I think it’s important to consider is not letting fear be your guide.  Andthat’s oftentimes what holds many young people back from doing fabulous things.

Let’s take my husband, for example.  He has dragged me kicking and screaming into things that I wanted no parts of.  (Laughter.)  And a lot of it was because of fear -- the fear of making mistakes, the fear of not knowing, the fear of uncertainty, the fear of leaving your comfort zone.

And we’re living in a world where we can no longer afford to let fear keep us apart, because the truth -- what I have learned, coming from the background I come from -- I grew up in a little apartment on the South Side of Chicago.  My parents didn’t get a chance to go to college, but they poured everything they had into me.  And no one could have envisioned that a kid like me would be sitting here, having given a speech at Peking University as the First Lady of the United States.

But easily, fear could have blocked me at every turn.  So I want all of the young people around the world to operate with the freedom that we have all fought for -- the freedom to explore the world, to learn about new cultures, to try hard things, to make mistakes.  And I know parents want you to be perfect because we want you to be safe -- (laughter) -- but life is about making mistakes, and maybe saying the wrong thing at the wrong time, and learning that you recover from even some of your worst mistakes, so that that fear doesn’t keep you from being as excellent as you can be.

And that’s what I think study abroad -- it’s that first step of leaving your country, speaking another language, having it come out of your voice, your lips, and having someone here actually understand you.  And you think, well, that wasn’t that bad.

So I want you -- first of all, I just want to applaud you all for being that brave, and for being a role model to other young people of what the world needs in you as leaders.  So don’t be afraid.  Start with your parents.

It's all nonsense..

Instead of the one-room tenement that Michelle describes, she grew up in a well-kept neighborhood of red-brick Arts and Craft-style houses that have long been home to respectable black families.

"Michelle was from a middle-class family," said one of her long-time friends, Angela Acree.

"She came from a regular family. They had a nice home.  It wasn't a mansion, but it was just fine.  It was a decent neighborhood."

Michelle's father was a volunteer organizer for the city's Democratic Party, a by-word for machine politics in America, and his loyalty was rewarded with a well-paid engineering job at Chicago's water plant.  Even before overtime, he earned $42,686 -- 25% more than High School teachers at the time.

[Robinsons]

Michelle's mother stayed at home and devoted her energies to her and her older brother Craig.  Marian Robinson nurtured great ambitions for both her children.

Television was all but banned in favor of homework, debates about the issues of the day and improving games of chess.

Bright and determined, Michelle was awarded a place at one of Chicago's first "magnet" schools.  She graduated from Whitney Young High School in 1981, and was awarded an affirmative-action seat at Princeton, one of America's most venerable and expensive universities

Michelle was trained in the dance:

And had an expensive prom dress

White House pastry chef resigns: "I don’t want to demonize cream, butter, sugar and eggs"

White House executive pastry chef Bill Yosses is resigning after First Lady Michelle Obama fundamentally changed his job duties to focus on healthier food.

Yosses is leaving the White House in June to work on a new project focusing on "food literacy" and The New York Times says Michelle is "partly to blame." The openly gay chef was hired by Laura Bush in 2007 to make his trademark cookie plates and sugar sculptures. Mrs. Obama took over in 2009 and ordered Yosses to make healthier plates in smaller portions.

Yosses began replacing butter with fruit puree and sugar with honey and agave. But Yosses was never fully committed to the new policy.

"I don’t want to demonize cream, butter, sugar and eggs," Yosses said, noting that his departure from the White House is a "bittersweet decision."

Michelle Obama said in a statement that she is "incredibly sad to see Bill Yosses go."

"I am also so grateful to him for his outstanding work, not just as the White House pastry chef, producing the most delectable creations for everything from birthday celebrations to state visits, but also as a key partner helping us get the White House kitchen garden off the ground and building a healthier future for our next generation. I wish Bill and his husband, Charlie, all the best in their future endeavors," Michelle Obama said.

Michelle to avoid Chinese human rights activists

Keith Koffler is reporting that Michelle Obama will not meet with human rights activists during her upcoming trip to China, according to White House officials, focusing instead on gauzy, feel-good kids issues that should be PR gold for the oppressive Chinese leadership.

While avoiding dissidents and anyone suffering under the regime, Mrs. Obama will cozy up to the wife of China's ruler, Peng Liyuan, a former singer who has a reputation for being beautiful and fabulous and who sang for the martial law troops who had massacred protestors in Tiananmen Square in 1989.

Michelle, who will be traveling with her daughters and her mother, will leave Wednesday and return March 26. According to White House officials, she'll visit fascinating tourist traps and talk about "education and youth empowerment," "people-to-people relations" and "cultural exchanges," all of which are code words for nothing much at all.

CaoShunli.jpgMeanwhile, there's one Chinese human rights activist Michelle definitely won't be meeting with. Because she's dead.

Last September, 52-year-old Cao Shunli disappeared from Beijing's airport in September as she tried to fly to a session of the UN Human Rights Council. According to the Wall Street Journal, Chinese authorities said they had arrested her for "picking quarrels and provoking troubles." Well she certainly was – by attempting to focus the council on China's human rights abuses.

What she got for her efforts was death by medical neglect while in Chinese custody. According to the Journal:

By October Cao's family was sounding alarms over her ill health, including symptoms of tuberculosis, liver disease and uterine fibroids. Authorities denied requests for medical parole or even hospitalization until Feb. 19, when they finally took her to a hospital. Cao soon fell into a coma and four weeks later she was dead.

So now Michelle won't have to pick quarrels or provoke troubles with Chinese authorities by trying to meet with her.

This is one aspect of Chinese culture that won't be exchanged. Instead, the message to U.S. students in all probability will be that China is oh so much like the United States.

Our differences are just misunderstandings! If only we could "communicate" better. It might even bring Cao Shunli back to life.

Experts: Michelle Obama cited bogus study showing drastic drop in childhood obesity

When Michelle Obama celebrated the fourth anniversary of "Let's Move," her White House initiative on fitness and healthy eating, she cited a recent study by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) showing a remarkable 43 percent drop in obesity rates among children ages 2-5.  Mrs. Obama brought up the study again on Friday at a Partnership for a Healthier America’s Building a Healthier Future Summit.  But a report by Reuters health & science correspondent Sharon Begley casts doubt on the validity of the results of the study.  While Begley concludes that "no one can say for certain that the claim is wrong," the results are so uncertain that "based on the researchers' own data, the obesity rate may have even risen rather than declined."

The problem lies in large measure with the small sample size of the CDC study and its relatively large margin of error.  Begley explains:

The 13.9 percent obesity rate among preschoolers reported for 2003-2004 had a large enough margin of error that the actual rate could range between 10.8 percent and 17.6 percent, the CDC authors acknowledged. The 8.4 percent rate in 2011-2012 reported could range from 5.9 percent and 11.6 percent.

Since the range for 2003-2004 overlaps with that of 2011-2012, [epidemiologist Geoffrey Kabat of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City] said, "that's another way of saying there might have been no change" in preschoolers' obesity rate. Even an increase is a statistical possibility.

The study size is not the only problem.  Other studies, some with considerably larger sample sizes, have shown significantly smaller decreases; others have shown little change; still others have actually shown obesity increasing.  For instance, a study of 200,000 children in the WIC (Women, Infants and Children) program "found virtually no change in obesity rates":

Rather than reducing the prevalence of obesity among 3-and-4-year olds in the WIC program in California's Los Angeles County, researchers found that the problem worsened from 2003 to 2011. Obesity rose to 20.4 percent from about 17 percent, the researchers reported in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report in 2013.

In New York, the WIC study found that obesity rates fell to 15.5 percent in 2011 from about 19.5 percent in 2003, a much less dramatic drop than the 40 percent decline.

"We agree there is a slight downward trend in obesity among 2-to-5-year olds," said Shannon Whaley, a co-author of the WIC study. "But a 43 percent drop is absolutely not what we're seeing."

This is not the first time Mrs. Obama has cited statistics in support of Let's Move that turned out to be less than meets the eye.  Just last year, on the third anniversary of Let's Move, the first lady's office sent out a press release that appeared to take credit for the recent developments that "national childhood obesity rate has leveled off, and even declined in some cities and states." In particular, the White House highlighted a 13 percent decline in childhood obesity in Mississippi.  But as we reported at the time:

[t]he 13 percent decrease that Mrs. Obama touted is measured from Spring 2005 through Spring 2011. “Let's Move” was launched in February 2010, so the first five years of the time period in question were prior to Let's Move's existence.

This week's Reuters report questioning the 43 percent decline suggests one more reason to question the results showing a decline in pre-schooler obesity rates:

The rest is here...

Michelle Obama joins creepy "nagging" campaign

NagToolkit.jpg

Michael Dorstewitz is reporting that now that every other avenue to get the nation's youth insured under ObamaCare has failed, the administration has thrown in the towel and is resorting to nagging.

Rhode Island's ObamaCare exchange, HealthSourceRI, has taken the concept of nagging to its creepiest extreme, and even offers what it calls a Nag Toolkit. The kit is designed to give mothers all they need to know in order to nag their kids into ObamaCare submission.

"Your kids don't want to get health insurance," the kit says. "They also don't want to get nagged. Let's find out which one they want less. Help us get your kids insured by nagging them about health insurance where they least expect it."

From there, moms are encouraged to go to social media and learn specific methods of nagging their offspring "mercilessly" to get them insured.

"Select a tutorial and learn how to be where your kids are," it says after clicking the Twitter icon. "And how to nag them mercilessly."

Too confusing? Don't want to nag them? No problem. In that event, the site suggests "give us your kid's email address and we'll do the nagging."

The Obama administration is also resorting to nagging. In a new video ad, the mothers of celebrities Jonah Hill, Adam Levine, Jennifer Lopez, and Alicia Keys describe what a handful their kids were growing up.

Sometimes they needed nagging, and if they're uninsured, they need to be nagged at again. The clip closes with Michelle Obama announcing, "We nag you because we love you. Go to healthcare.gov and enroll today."

If the AffordableCare Act has a snowball's chance in hell of working, a large percentage of healthy, young adults are needed to sign up for coverage. This hasn't happened yet, despite many ads directed at America's youth -- most of them tasteless.

I expect the nagging approach will be equally unsuccessful.

Watch this cringeworthy "celebrity mom" ObamaCare ad that features Michelle Obama:

From YouTube page: "Moms put up with a lot, but there's nothing worse than feeling their child isn't protected. Go to healthcare.gov and get covered before enrollment ends on March 31. Do it for your mom."

The Obamas are bastards

There goes Michelle, selling ObamaCare to military families to increase enrollment in ObamaCare, while Barack cuts military health care benefits making it necessary -- while leaving his union supporters untouched.

Obama's proposed defense budget calls for military families and retirees to pay sharply more for their healthcare, while leaving unionized civilian defense workers’ benefits untouched. The proposal is causing a major rift within the Pentagon, according to U.S. officials. Several congressional aides suggested the move is designed to increase the enrollment in ObamaCare’s state-run insurance exchanges.

Significantly, the plan calls for increases between 30 percent to 78 percent in Tricare annual premiums for the first year. After that, the plan will impose five-year increases ranging from 94 percent to 345 percent -- more than 3 times current levels.

According to congressional assessments, a retired Army colonel with a family currently paying $460 a year for health care will pay $2,048.

The new plan hits active duty personnel by increasing co-payments for pharmaceuticals and eliminating incentives for using generic drugs.

And here is Michelle, smiling, telling military families "we care."

These people are despicable!

Fifty and fabulous

Carol Costello hosts a conversation about Michelle Obama celebrating her 50th birthday today and whines about double standards for aging men and women.

WTF! A conversation about style featuring a woman -- named after a communist revolutionary -- who looks like she put her toe into a light socket.

New York school dumps Michelle Obama's food plan after kids complain of hunger

MichelleChowsDown.jpg

Jammie says Michelle is free to shovel as many cheeseburgers and orders of fries into her piehole as she pleases, but the kids get what's good for them or something.

New York's Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake school district has become the latest casualty in first lady Michelle Obama's preferred lunch plan, dropping the menu after too many students complained of hunger.

"[Food service manager Nicky] Boehm and her staff worked hard to implement the new regulations, but there were just too many problems and too many foods that students did not like and would not purchase," said Assistant Superintendent Chris Abdoo about the National School Lunch Program in a statement reported by EAGNews.org. "Students complained of being hungry with these lunches and the district lost money."

The school system decided to instead create its own lunch menu for next year.

The district lost about $100,000 trying out the federal menu, which offered such meals as "part" of a chicken patty on a minicroissant, EAGNews.org reported.

"Students felt they weren't getting good value for their money," Ms. Boehm said in EAGNews.org. "The high schoolers especially complained the portion sizes were too small and many more students brought in lunch from home."

Undaunted, the nattering nabobs from the nanny state will soon be pushing Greek yogurt on the starving schoolkids.

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer says New York is one of four states chosen to participate in a U.S. Department of Agriculture pilot program to purchase Greek yogurt for schools.

The USDA says participating schools in Tennessee, Idaho, and Arizona will also test in the upcoming school year whether it's cost effective for the agency to buy Greek yogurt on behalf of schools operating the National School Lunch Program.

Since yogurt is highly perishable, the USDA chose four states regionally that have differing proximity to yogurt manufacturers and plans to test distribution through various warehousing models. If it works, the program could become national.

One district has already lost $100,000 on this crap and now they think it'll be cost effective to feed them yogurt?

And don't forget the veggies -- the dancing veggies?

Michelle to take week-long trip to China

Let’s Move . . . to the other side of the planet!

Keith Koffler is reporting that Michelle Obama will visit China from March 19-26 -- and it’s all for the children!

Which children, I’m not sure. Chinese children I think. But she’ll be looking to educate American children and promote interconnectedness and other great buzz words.

And she’ll be doing some fantastic sight seeing on behalf of the children! Also, her daughters Sasha and Malia and mother Marian will be coming along on this important mission, which will no doubt cost taxpayers hundreds of thousand of dollars, and probably well north of $1 million.

All to be paid for with borrowed money from . . . China!

Michelle announced her trip in a blog post today:

My husband and I take the time to visit countries like China because we know that today, more than ever before, our lives here in America are connected to the lives of people around the world.

Thank you for taking the time. Please, while you’re there, get in a little tine for yourself. Oh, wait, you’ve got that covered:

I’ll also be visiting various historical and cultural sites in China, and I look forward to sharing with you the stories of the students I meet, as well as the interesting facts I learn about Chinese history and culture.

Oh God, thanks, because we never could have found that stuff on the Internet. She’ll stop of course in Xi’an, where she can try to talk education with the terrocota army:

TerracottaArmy.jpg

Michelle will not only be speaking to Chinese students about them, she’ll be telling them about Michelle:

I’ll be talking with students about their lives in China and telling them about America and the values and traditions we hold dear.  I’ll be focusing in particular on the power and importance of education, both in my own life and in the lives of young people in both of our countries.

Michelle and her entourage -- are the cousins coming on this one too? -- will also stop in Beijing and Chengdu.

Michelle will be do a daily blog "complete with videos and photos, and answering questions from "kids across America."

Michelle in 2011 took a similar exciting excursion to South Africa. Somehow she never tours Canada.

Meanwhile, Barack Obama will be visiting the Netherlands, Belgium, the Vatican and Saudi Arabia. But that trip wouldn’t be quite as important, so those countries won’t get a first lady.

I mean, who cares about Dutch kids? And does Belgium have terrocota soldiers? I think not.

Michelle vows to rescue "bewildered" grocery shoppers with new regulations

B. Christopher Agee says just when it seems there is no remaining facet of the nutrition industry in which Michelle Obama has not injected herself, she shows up for a press conference to prove otherwise.

Just days after instructing public schools to discontinue any advertisements for unapproved foods, she stepped in front of cameras at the White House to tout her latest mission: redesigning nutrition labels. She explained the changes, which include a new, bolder display of caloric content and redefined serving sizes, as a way to more easily determine what foods a family should buy.

Her comments, however, painted shoppers as completely inept and in need of big government to step in once again to save the day.

In an attempt to recreate what considers the average American’s supermarket experience, she said, "all you could do was scratch your head, confused and bewildered, and wonder, is there too much sugar in this product?"

Despite the fact that nutrition labels have been mandatory -- and clearly marked -- for decades, the first lady still believes commoners are too dense to make informed decisions.

"The stream of questions and worries running through your head," she said, "when all you really wanted to know was, should I be eating this or not?"

Grocery shopping for the average consumer, she suggested, requires "a thesaurus, a calculator, a microscope, or a degree in nutrition," which she contends will be a thing of the past after her latest whim becomes the law of the land.

The Obama administration has taken incremental steps over the past five years to restrict liberty and move Americans toward the leftist ideals of centralized planning and governmental restriction. For her part, the first lady has focused most of her attention on deciding what citizens should be allowed to eat.

She invented the "right to understand what’s in the food we’re feeding our families" during her recent address, though such liberty obviously does not extend to what parents are allowed to send in their kids’ lunchbox.

No matter the spin radical leftists put on their intrusive policies, the end result is always the same. Each move is a strategic step toward giving the political elite more power over our lives.

Judging from Michelle Obama’s impression of the American people, she likely thinks we’re all too stupid to even notice.

Michelle Obama unveils food label proposals: "This will be the new norm"

MichelleTheFoodNAZI.jpg

Dan Roberts is reporting that Michelle Obama has some bad news for weight-conscious shoppers and food manufacturers: we've all been cheating.

In a rare foray into a frontline political battlefield, the first lady on Thursday announced a series of proposed changes to US food labelling rules that seek to tackle the fact that the average serving sizes used to calculate calorie intake have lost track with the reality of modern American appetites.

"This will be the new norm for providing consumers with the information they need," said the First Lady.

"We first launched Let's Move four years ago, [and] all of us here today were driven by a simple belief: that parents deserve to have the information they need to make healthy choices for their kids," she added.

"This isn't a particularly radical idea; in fact, it seems pretty obvious. But the truth is that too often, it's nearly impossible to get the most basic facts about the food we buy for our families."

If the alterations are adopted, drinks companies, for example, would no longer be able to treat a 20oz bottle of soda as containing 2.5 servings of 8oz each for the purpose of labelling estimated calorie levels. Instead, both 12oz cans and 20oz bottles would each have to be treated as a single serving, and the calorie estimate displayed prominently on the label will increase by 50% or 150% accordingly.

In total, the new changes proposed will affect 27 of the 157 product categories governed by portion rules.

In some categories, serving sizes will go down. Average consumption levels of yoghurts, for example, have typically shrunk from 8oz servings to 6oz servings, according to FDA research, and the labelling would change to reflect that.

But in most cases, serving sizes will jump. A portion of ice cream, for instance, would now be measured as a cup, rather than half a cup. Health officials hope the move will encourage consumers to take a more sober look at their eating habits.

Michelle told the audience of public health officials and food industry executives at the White House that the new proposals would be open to consultation in the coming months, but made clear she expected significant change.

Kathleen Sebelius, the health and human services secretary, said the scale of the US "obesity epidemic" made it imperative that the guidelines were updated.

Obesity in children trebled between the 1970s and 2005, and officials estimate nearly half of Americans could be obese by 2020 if trends continue.

But Sebelius claimed recent data showing a drop in obesity among pre-schoolers was "a sigh that our efforts are beginning to work".

Michelle added: "We are starting to see some changes but we are nowhere near the end of this road."

FDA officials acknowledge that the move may prove controversial for some in the food industry, whose lobbyists have long fought efforts to tighten labelling rules, and industry "stakeholders" will be invited to comment before the FDA can proceed.

"We recognise that people will have strong opinions about this, which is why we have tried to root our methodology in research about how people act in the real world," one administration official told the Guardian.

"I don't encounter anyone who is thoughtful in the industry who does not understand that it is important to keep the labels up to date with the science."

Who is this "we" Michelle keeps referring to?

Can you imagine what the USA looks like around the world when they see this video of the Bufooness in Chief. That appearance is so disrespectful of the Office of the President. It is truly a disgrace. No wonder our influence is sagging. The Saudis must be having a ball passing this clip around their iPads.
